    ATI x800 or GeForce 6800

I just built myself a new Athlon64 gaming rig. What i have now is a
9600xt (radeon) and while it's decent for FarCry (i can run 16x12 with
no AA) i'm thinking about jumping up to the newer models with Doom3
here and HL2 comming. Anyone have a radeon x800 or GF 6800? If so what
    are your impressions?

Here's somebench marks for HL2 ATI vs GF. While GF was slightly
better in Doom it got its ass kicked in HL2, although some new drivers
    may boost FPS

I checked [H]ardOCP and Guru3D for stats and comparisons. It basically boils down to 3 cards:
    ATI X800 XT Platinum ($500)
    ATI X800 PRO ($400)
    nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra ($400)

6800 Ultra does slightly better than the x800 PRO in Doom3

x800 PRO does noticeably better than 6800 Ultra in CS:Source and HL2

x800 XT does muchbetter than any card in any game. (It can run any game on the market with 16xAA &16x AF @ 1600x1200 and never drop below 30 FPS.... Ridiculous)

6800 requires 2 AGP slots because of the size of the cooling unit. 6800 requires an upgraded power supply.

x800 Pro & XT take up only one AGP slot.

It seems to me that the ATI X800 XT Platinum is the way to go.

<DIV>Any reviews of the X800 for us hitman? I can't afford a new video card just now, but I like to know what's going on in the world of computer parts, just in case I win the lottery. [-o</DIV>

i've never been much for long-winded posts (unless i'm pissed and
ranting, i type for days then :smt003). So i'll give it to you short
and sweet... I got the ATI X800 PRO (they didn't have the XT when i
went in) and i have to say this card is insane. The first time i ran
FarCry at 16x12 with aa and high textures i nearly pissed myself ... it
was that good. Doom 3 runs great (16x12-high textures) although not
quite as well as on a GF6800 - thanks to NVIDIA and Id becomming
bedfellows. I have a lot of pci cards in my case and a HUGE perk for me
with the ATI is that's it's quite a bit smaller than the GF. This has
become a trend with NVIDIA making cards that i need to buy an acre of
land to install ... and it's quite annoying.

All in all i'm very happy with my purchase, it's nice to be able to
play good games on my pc again. If you have a fast enough system
otherwise i'd say it's worth the money.

Hit, is the card you bought AGP or PCI? You mentioned PCI cards so I was just curious. My mobo sucks and doesn't have any AGP slots, so I have to go with pci and still looking fora new graphics card.

Ooooh. Did you get the PCI Express version? I didn't think those were out yet. I was reading about the x800 PCIE versions and they were pretty damned impressive.

Tanner - If they're PCI, they're likely PCI Express which isn't quite PCI. PCIE (or PCIX) is essentially a hardware upgrade on PCI. Same size, but a lot more capable than PCI standard. Unfortunately that means a PCIE card won't work in a PCI slot. (it'll fit, it just won't work)
