Hey all,
Running my computer now on a Static DSL service w/o a router. Can anyone recommend a good/free and hopefully user friendly firewall I can run? I plan on gaming on it (Everquest 2) as well as running Team Speak.
TIA,
Whiteice

Zonealarm fit the bill?

For me, i think ZA is the devil incarnate. I use SyGate at work and love it. Just depends on what you're used to.
Yeah zone alarm has been my firewall of choice for a while, I am running ZA pro, 'tis very good ^.^
I agree with zone alarm, but i really suggest you go the extra mile, and get Norton Internet Securities. Its only $50.
I used ZoneAlarm for a long time before I got my router. It works great, but for the first couple of days you'll deal with it asking you to approve internet access for your applications, but you only have to answer it once. Also,if it asks you about an app you're not sure of, it almost always has a link that tells you what the app does, so you don't inadvertently grant access to any malware.
I have Zone Alarm too, but you are asking for a free firewall. I would suggest using the Firewall that comes with Windows SP2. They have made it a lot safer and my brother has been using it for 2 years without any problems
I assume this is a PC directly connected? If you have a router, such as
the Linksys BEFW11S4 dealie, use the firewall on that and set up port
forwarding. If it's a Mac (I know it isn't tho) then use ipfw!
I would definitely reccomend a dedicated firewall of some sort (a linux
box (with ipfw or something) or a firewalling router (this is easiest))
and put your network behind that (and usually you can set up a DMZ for
stuff you want out on the internet-workable segment).
Again, I know it's not a Mac, but Little Snitch is a good ad hoc firewaller for the Mac.
The personal version of Zone Alarm is free...Zone Alarm Pro isn't, but it's more than just a firewall.Originally Posted by Sharky"
