Borderlands has DLC before the game is even launched!

How do you guys feel about this? Frankly I'm kind of pissed. It's bad PR on Gearbox's part to announce this. Also the fact that they probably could have included it in the release next week, but decided to nickel and dime us instead doesn't go over well with me. I will admit it looks really badass though.

EDIT: I just reread the article and it's still in development slated for release later this year. Still I hate it when they announce DLC before the game is released. I feel like I'm getting only part of the game and have to buy the rest.

They announced quite some time ago the game will have DLC. A lot of the DLC ideas came after the game went into certification mode, so they just kept a small team working on the DLC content while the main game finished up, then the whole team switches to DLC. However they did say they're listening to what the customers want to make tweaks to what actually ships in the DLC.

People get so pissed about DLC and about when it's announced. I never understand that.

Zombies? In Borderlands? Sign me up!

And if I don't want to be signed up, nobody's putting a gun to my head and forcing me to use my credit card.

As long as the initial game's content is worth my $60, I'm good to go. More options is just better for everyone.

I think Gearbox is saying yes, we WILL be providing post launch support, so buy with confidence! (more or less)

Once they start shipping half of a game for $60 and charging for DLC. then be pissed.

I think early DLC is great! Too many games wait too long to put DLC out and the game is off the radar for me (Mass Effect, L4D, Team Fortress, etc...). I think Fallout did good with the DLC timing.

I'm just gald to see that there's some definate dlc down the road, instead of the vague hints in most of the interviews. As long as we see a level cap boost at some point down the road in addition to new content, this game should have a very long shelf life. Don't misunderstand, I'd still be excited about the game even if there weren't any dlc plans, it's just good to see it's on the way.

I think in general people just don't realize how a large software product is built.

Here's an example of a project (this is not an EXACT schedule but close):

Jan 1 - Planning starts (progam managers architects etc)

Jan 15th (Devs and test involved in what was thought up about planning)

    Jan 30th (plans settled.)

    Feb 1st - Coding begins

    intermediate milestones.

May 15th Beta coding and testing complete

June 15 RC (release candidate) milestone which contains fixes for bugs found by beta customers and must have things (no new features).

July 15th (Code lockdown, no changes unless it's a huge customer problem)

August 1st (code goes gold and sent to manufacturing process.

    Ocober -Novemember (game released).

NOTE: from July 15th on your developers are done working on the current project. They only need to fix major bugs. They will begin working on the next project. Your choices as I see them would be for them to work on some DLC OR to postopone your favorite game till februarary and include that DLC in the game. And any additional DLC will need 2-3 month lead time for testing and certification. What you get when you don't do that is more glitches people exploit to get out of maps, and corrupted save games.
