Thoughts on H3 game-based achievements and how to get them.

Greetings. I'm sort-of preparing my first AGE blog entry, and wanted some of y'alls input on a portion of it. Consider this market research!

If you're anything like me (and for your sake, I hope you're not!) you've got some outstanding Halo 3 achievements left on your Xbox.

Just for clarification's sake - I am referring to the achievements that are assigned to the game specifically. Like "Too Close to the Sun" (destroyed a vehicle with a Spartan Laser) or "We're in for Some Chop" (destroyed an enemy vehicle w/equipment).

For the record, there are several I don't have. "Mongoose Mowdown"; "Steppin' Razor"; and "Maybe Next Time Buddy" are three of them.

Personally, I have several thoughts on them, and some questions.

We all want closure on a game. I've been ripping through "Lego Star Wars" - which is a very fun game to play - and will certainly continue to play - but my goal has been to get the game to 100% completion. (I'm at 90% I think.)

Is this how y'all feel about Halo3 (or any game for that matter)- that completion of the game's 'extras' is importantSome of the achievements are only unlockable in a ranked match (Lone Wolves, Ranked Team Slayer, etc..) - and I would imagine that it's more about wanting to level up in EXP than getting the achievement for many of you. I know that I'm not concentrating on finding a Mongoose to run someone over with - just for the sake ofan achievement in a ranked match.

On the other hand, I would love to have them all, if for no other reason than the extra armor outfittings/configurations that you have to mess around with. Not that it's a huge reward (and I would never arm that Katana sword like some do - I think it looks strange) - but it DOES add something to the game for me. If nothing else, just to play 'dress up my Spartan' - and get in touch with my feminine side. [*-)]

I know that I'm not accomplished enough as a player - and may never be - to get all of them, and that's a bit of a frustration. Why put achievements in a game thatare biased towards skill level?

(Again, I'm not whining here - just curious on philosophy.)

As a second part to that - are any of you willing to find some of your fellow AGErs who are willing to go into a ranked match as a group and try to get the achievements that everyone needs?

I could imagine that might be fun on headset (okay, Bob...you go stand over there and I'll run you down with a Mongoose - but after that, you can stick me with five grenades to get your "Lee R. Wilson" memorial achievement unlocked....NO! Fred, we said you could get your "fear the pink mist" after Billy gets his "two for one" with the laser...don't needle me now...(BLAM!)

I guess I'm wondering if there's an ethic to this. In other words, are yourobbing yourself ofwhat Halo 3 achievements are intendedto be by teaming up to get them?

Is it wrong to say that I'm willing to compromise - what some may feel is -the spirit of the achievements ("get better at Halo, and you'll get your rewards) - or am I - by teaming up online with a group to get those achievements actually serving the higher purpose of working towards a goal within a gaming community?

I'll stop for your thoughts.

That's precisely why I believe those MP achievements are in Lone Wolf only. You can't enter that playlist with a party so nobody is going to help you unless you convince them to in the lobby before a match. Which, BTW, seems to be a frequent thing among little kids. *cue high pitched pre-pubescent male voice* any one wanna help me get the overkill achievement?

These last few that have some skill bias really aren't worth that many points. It seems to me the point of the achievement is to actually "achieve" something. I generally don't try to get all the achievements for a game and I'm fine with that. I doubt I'll get those Lone Wolf related achievements in Halo, since I hate playing Lone Wolf. But I might get bored one day and want to outfit my spartan with a katana too one day, so you never know.

In the end, I doubt anyone here is going to judge your motives. If you need/want any help with in game achievements, drop me an invite. Specifically, "We're in for some Chop" and "Too Close to the Sun" can be achieved in campaign mode, right?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Unfortunately, my remaining achievements are all for Lone Wolves -

Steppin' Razor, Two For One, Maybe Next Time Buddy, Mongoose Mowdown

But I know what you're saying - I'm beginning not to like Lone Wolves either, because it is uber-competitive. I find myself getting stressed out playing in there - and for no good reason.

Sure, the point is to 'achieve' something - but is it catering to that small percentage of the population that can get it? Here's something that I found on an old Bungie posting.

Campaign Complete: Normal – Completed the Campaign on Normal Difficulty: 43.28%

Campaign Complete: Legendary – Completed the Campaign on Legendary Difficulty: 15.14%

Graduate: Graduated from basic training. Stick with it to earn your Spartan insignia: 66.92%

UNSC Spartan: Promoted to Sergeant. Proven in combat, you are a Spartan: 52.07%

The most found metagame skull? Black Eye skull with 34.26%

The least found metagame skull? Tilt at 22.98% (Go find it, jerks! It’s one of the best skulls in the game!)

At 6.21%, Steppin’ Razor is the hardest multiplayer Achievement to earn, with Two for One right behind it at 6.77% and Overkill nipping at its heels (6.75%)

8.68% of players have unlocked the Marathon Man Achievement

1000/1000 Gamerscore: 2.07%
[/list]

Wow. If only 2% of the whole community has ALL the Halo 3 achievements - then I guess that in itself is quite an accomplishment!

If those particular achievements were actually skill based, then i'd agree with you. With the exception of Triple Kill and Frenzy, those achievements are 100% luck. IMO, the only reason that they were added was so that people would utilize the new weapons/vehicles in Halo 3 or as a novelty. Completion is one thing, but if you see someone with 1000/1000 on Halo then it's more than likely that they padded to get it.

I've tried running folks over with my Mongoose, and I can never get it done - that's certainly a skill lacking on my part! [Y]

I would agree though the "Two for One" with the laser would have to be in a situation where people were dumb enough to stack up in a conga line...

Just a matter of finding two people that are engaged and running one of them over. It's still luck IMO, you have to be going pretty damn fast for the kill to count.

this is the last acheivement that i got during my h3 days. i almost positive was a game of swords on the pit. grabbed the active camo and hacked away. i don't remember it being particularly hard to do, just a right place at the right time sort of thing.

The only thing that annoys me about them is that they're Lone Wolves only, which I don't get. I understand making it ranked only so people can't party up and cheat for them, but why not let them be had in team slayer, etc?

I hardly ever play Lone Wolves, so I doubt I'll end up getting creditfor them even though I've done them while playing other ranked playlists.

When I saw the MP achievement list for Halo 3, the first thing that came to my mind was Halo 2 and how many matches I played then so I knew that sooner or later I should get all of themand not becauseI'd belooking to get them but because I was planning to playhundreds ofmatchs just like I did in Halo 2

I think the MP related achievements are not really hard to get if you play often, they just happen like they did in Halo 2 ...it gets difficult if you jump into a match with the only purpose of getting them, I say, play and have fun, they'll come one day [Y]

the achievements just come randomly in Halo 3, they are fun - but I'm not worried about getting those costumes, I use the default elite anyway.
