Re: Anyone interested in a Magic The Gathering Ladder?

Some of this is new to me. I get the basic premise of the ladder, but I'm not sure how ranking starts. Do you automatically get assigned a spot at the start? Or does the first game determine this?

I'd like to get this up and running starting on thursday, if possible. The weekend of the 4th will probably be busy, but the first week we should work out the kinks. How is the ladder implemented into AGE? Do we need to petition to close one to allow a spot for this ladder? Or can we just run it through the MTG friend's list?

Here's what I've got so far:

Best 2 out of 3 games determines winner

Ladder will run Thursday, July 2nd to Thursday Sept. 3rd

All cards and decks are allowed. As well as decks not fully unlocked. (though not advised)

You may challenge up to 2 people a week. (I'm unsure about this one, help me out)

Challenger sets up a room with his deck picked, chalengee enters room with the deck they will USE selected.

Editting of deck is allowed before match starts, but you may NOT change you deck once both people are in the room.

Challenges must be completed over the course of the night agreed upon by both parties.

If a crash occurs, game is replayed in its entirety.

Standard Settings used: 20 life, 7 card draw.

Also, please sign up for the FOF list. It's AGE MTG Friends. Some of you have posted interest, but have not sent requests yet.

    Thanks!

The starting order is determined by the order in which people sign up.  First sign up = first place, second sign up = second place, etc.

Send a PM to grumpyshrapnel with the rules and dates the ladder will run and he'll get it set up.  Once the ladder has been created, it will be open for signups.  Once everyone has signed up, you can PM grumpy and he will activate the ladder.

This must be determined beforehand.  Typically, the way it works is you can challenge someone up to 2 spots above you.  In the last two Street Fighter ladders, there was a 7 day waiting period to challenge a person you just played.  You are free to challenge anyone else available to you as long it is not someone you played within the past 7 days.  Also, you must determine a length of time that a challenge may exist.  Again, we typically use a 5 day time period to get a match completed.  If the match isn't completed within 5 days, the win goes to the challenger.

It looks like you have the bulk of the work done.  How many tentative participants do you have?  Ideally, you want at least 10 so the ladder doesn't become stagnant with a lack of opponents.

Thanks so much Greasy. I see how it works now. I was trying to understand how the #1 spot wouldn't get overwhelmed with challenges. These rules for challenges sound like they translate perfectly.

Also, thanks to everyone else who provided input. Hopefully, this is only the first of many ladders. We'll run this one mostly wide open so that the community can get a feel for the game. At the end, we can make suggestions and possible rule changes according to what the ladder participants experienced and what the community would like to see!

I believe we have 10 plus for this event. There's 11, including me, on the friend's list and a few people who said they'd be interested but have not yet signed up for the FOF. Hopefully, we can get that all ironed out by Thurs.

I'm somewhat interested, but the next week will be bad for playing.

I may be wrong...but I don't think the chalengee can choose their deck before they join the room.

I've only played online a few times so far, so don't take my word for this, but I'm pretty sure whichever deck you most recently edited offline, will be your deck upon entering the match online.  At least that's how I think it works.

Edit:  You don't even have to go as far as the edit screen.  You just choose the 'Deck Builder' option from the main menu, and then choose the deck you want to play with.  You can tell which deck is your current deck from the main menu.  The name and the deck color(s) will be shown on the bottom right.

I am interested.  What about some two-headed giant?

To my knowledge, two-headed giant can be played over live, but each team has to be on the same xbox. For newer folks,we figured 1v1 challenges wide open would be best for the start of the ladder. In future ladders, we can make changes as needed.

Also, 3 and 4 player games can be played over live, so there's always that. We could also create teams in a four player game, but some cards will hurt teammates regardless.

I'll postpone the start of the ladder untill next Tuesday, which gives everyone the weekend to enjoy. I think it makes more sense anyway, though I'm excited to get it going. Please don't forget to sign up for the friends list @ AGE MTG Friends. As you all know, it's mich easier to track people this way.

How stupid is that!?!?!  Really?  Did the programers not play a 360 prior to making this game???  Why would you have an option like Two-Headed
Giant and NOT give the players the function of teaming up with friends.  DUMB!!!

Agreed, very disappointing.  I should have remembered this from our podcast discussion. Maybe we will get that mode at some point, if not through DLC maybe through another game.

+1 , I hope the message boards are inundated with requests for this and Co-op to be added over Live. A very stupid choice for them to make it same console only.

Re: Anyone interested in a Magic The Gathering Ladder?

Sending the info for the ladder today. It will be starting a bit later than anticipated. (will know exactly when based on a reply from grumpy)

I think I've decided to make this wide open. There was initially some talk about focusing on not knowing what deck an opponent would play, but I've left that by the wayside.

If we're going to allow customization and sideboarding before a match begins, there's no reason we shouldn't allow deck changing. There is somewhat of a rock/paper/scissors effect with the different decks, but each deck is capable of beating any other. And to be honest, I just don't want to overmanage it. It's supposed to be fun, and with any luck, a bit instructive to all of us as well!

I'm shooting to start tomorrow or thursday, will post when it goes live or if there's any delay.
