While I just picked up a DS today I am really enjoying it. WCPDS was one of the two titles I picked up because I loved the xbox version. I have to say I am impressed with what they have done..here's a review.
Gameplay: Poker is the name of the game and the DS handles it with grace and style. So I figured this would be a carbon copy of the xbox/ps2/gc games but I was suprised to find out it was pretty different. First off it has a career mode which lets you follow the story of a guy/gal new to the poker scene. When you first start you have a map of the casino on the bottom screen and the top screen shows you moving in first person 3d. This alone adds a little something extra to the WCP formula. The casino's each have multiple tables with 12 variations of poker as well as a blackjack table. Once at a table you see the other players on the top screen and your cards, money and options on the touch screen. The menu's are very easy to understand and use. Another thing they added is that the characters seem more active than in the console versions. IE, an elderly man will pick up an oxygen mask and take a hit in between complaing :smt003 The create a character is not as indepth as the console versions as far as the face's go, but there are more styles of shirts, hats, watches, necklaces, wristbands ect. The guy I created is a big muscle bound dude with his shirt off, full of tats. Little touches like that make this game worth picking up even if you already own the console version as I do.
Graphics: The graphics are very well done. They could have easily went with the straight to the table like the other versions but the ability to run around in a 3d casino is nice. The graphics are suprisingly good for a poker game.
Sound: Good for a poker game, and a handheld one at that. People at the table complain and taunt you if you take to long. There is some background music and noise that each have a volume control so they dont get to intrusive.
Control: I'm diggin the touch screen, and with this game it makes it all the more fun. Using the touch screen for all the functions while at the table brings you in it a little more than just hitting a button. Everything about the control in this game is simple but fun.
Multiplayer: Yes, it supports wireless for up to 6 players but I dont have anyone to try this out with yet. Supposedly you are able to "taunt" the other players while playing. Sounds interesting.
Gameplay 9/10
Graphics 8.5/10
Sound 8.5/10
Control 10/10
So if you own a DS and you like Poker I would suggest picking this title up even if you own the console version. It was only $20 US new like its home system brothers so its a steal at that price.
