View Full Version : Gears of War ladder?

Since our ladders are designed for a 1vs1 structure, I am usually not too keen on using first person shooter games for our ladders. But, with Gears of War using the cover system, it kind of allows for a 1vs1 experience. I think this game may work for a 1vs1 ladder. What do you guys think? Would you be interested in joining a Gears of War ladder?

I was thinking more about a 2 vs 2 matchup of some kind. I was
thinking perhaps something like a league with a points system.
Here are my ideas...

Compose the two man teams at random by
trying to match people to similiar time zones, or simply allowing
people to pick their own teams.

System structure - Upon
completion of team assignments each team will play one or two matches a
week versus opposing teams. Each team matchup would be composed
of up to three matches. The matches would be first to two or
three rounds. Winning a match would earn your team one
point. A clean sweep, two won matches to opponents winning no
matches would result in a bonus point for a maximum of three points for
the winning team.

Game rules - At the beginning of the game the
team with the lowest number of points has the option to choose host or
choose first map to play in the match. After the first match is
played the host remains the same but the loser gets to choose the
second map. The third match (if necessary) host remains the same,
loser of second match picks the map for the third match.

Season
structure - Play one to two matches every week for anywhere to four to
eight weeks, points are tallied throughout the season, then at the end
of the season have a playoff weekend for the top four, six, eight teams
or whatever. Seeding determined by the final point totals from
the season.

Special rules - I consider AGE a family first
organization, sometimes team matchups may happen that can just not be
met due to time constraints etc. If both teams make an effort to
make the match but simply cannot do it they should be awarded one point
each. If one team is specifically dodging one team then they
should not be awarded the point.

These are some ideas I have had
about it, Im sure they are clear as mud, but I wanted to put my
thoughts out there to see if there would be any interest.

Personally, I think we should try to give a regular tournament a shot.

2v2 or 3v3

Maybe a round robin first round with the top 4 teams going to a final.

I know it's hard to get tournaments running around here but isn't Gears a great enough game that there would be enough interest to try it?

Maybe first to 7 with each week featuring a different map?

And we already have a game night scheduled so it should be easy enough to get people to the matches...

Jeredpk2000,

That sounds like a lot of fun, and I would be all about it if people would consistently show up to the matches. But organizing the tournament style events can be very tough sometimes. It's like pulling teeth sometimes trying to get people to decide on a time and day to play. I don't know if you have played in our ladders yet, but what makes me want to use them is because they are completely automated. All you have to do is challenge the person and post the results. All the standing and ranking is taken care of by the program. This makes it so there is no need for an moderator to baby sit it and make sure people play their matches.

We could still do the team route, but instead of everyone signing up for the ladder, only the team captain would. We could have a 2vs2 ladder where the captin is responsible for relaying challenge information with his team mate. FYI - when someone is challenged, a PM is automatically sent to the challenger and the challenged person giving a deadline to complete it.

If we get enough people, I think we could make a 2vs2 ladder work using the team captain system.

I think a 2v2 is a minimum for Gears. GoW seems to be a game in which the better teamwork players actually stand a chance beating the better twitch aiming players. I'd be up for a 2v2 ( or 3v3/4v4 ) if we can get enough people.

Wow, I didn't realise we had that many people signed up for the Game Night. If we can get that many people to sign up here for a tournament, I would be happy to set up the tournament. We could do a 2vs2, 8 team tournament if we get enough people.

I would probably be down for it. With the upcoming holidays I have a lot of time off...

So, if you need someone to roll around and easily get chainsawed 'cuz you roll into an opposing member -like a jackass- on your team - let me know.

(Probably a good thing to do while the game is hot...a couple of post in GoW xbox forums sparks curiousity about the site -linked through my xbox sig- so we could probably drum a few extras up)

Sounds like me right now. I'd be up for it, too. And, if you're keeping track, here's another vote for the 2-4 person teams.

On a similar note, there's a thread on the Xbox board at AVSForum in which a bunch of people are posting for online play with basically the same philosophy as AGE. I'd link to it, but their server seems to be busy/down at the moment; it'snot the sticky -it's titled GoW online play something or other. Being a new member here, Iwouldn't presume topost there myself to advertise, but I figure maybe Sharky is interested, since that's where I learned about this site?

...the better teamwork players actually stand a chance beating the better twitch aiming players.

This is a big reason I love GoW, with smaller maps and team sizes it isn't a chore to pull of effective strategies. So far it seems that a good team will beat great individual players a vast majority of the time which is the way it should be.

I'm down for as big of teams as we can pull off, 2,3 or 4. I think if we set 2 or more standard times that matches are to played people will know if they can commit or not. For example matches are to be played Monday or Wednesday nights at 9pm Eastern, if teams can agree to different times that is up to them but as a standard the match is to occur at one of those 2 times. Also if we add a pool of people that can't commit for the full tourney, add them as a list of subs that can fill in if need be.

Lots of great ideas here, let me know if I can be of any help getting this tourney off the ground. As mentioned you could use the current ladder match program, just dedicate one person on the team to be on it. With RB6 pushed back another week, we've got a few weeks weeks with no competition from any other big games.

Grumpy brings up a good point. The holidays are coming up ... are we going to have issues getting the games played? All my family lives near me, so this isn't an issue for me. I hate waiting 2 months to start the tournament ... being that the game is hot now.

well, a tournament is sounding like it is the better choice over the ladder. I will leave this thread open for a few more days to see if we get more signups. More than likely I will setup either a 2vs2 or 3vs3 tourny.

Hmmm, yeah especially with Rainbow Six on the horizon and I know a lot of people were excited about that.

Maybe a league would work better then. Instead of scheduling everyone round robin, your team can play other teams as much as you want when you want. Each team would have 4 people but the matches would only be 3 vs 3 to allow for more flexible match times.

If someone wants to drop that's fine and that team would be able to add a new member or something like that.

I don't know I'm just rambling. I want to think a regular tournament would work, but the more I think about it that wouldn't work effectively until after the holidays.

And honestly, I only really care about any tournament because there isn't a squad based matchmaking option. If they implement that in a patch then I'll be satisfied playing competitively against the GP. I just want to play competitively
