My son is jonesing to play a military style shooter thanks to his buddy who, much to my chagrin, is allowed to play CoD Black Ops (Nazi Zombie mode). They are 8 years old.
Aidan's Criteria:
Must be modern day type stuff, i.e. no sci-fi shooters so Halo is out (I was trying to sell him on Halo 3 ODST but he wanted none of that).
WW2 would be ok also I think
Zombies are cool
Dad's criteria:
Has to be either rated T or below and/or have settings to reduce/remove the gore and language
Has to support local splitscreen co-op
Has to not be terrible
Either retail or XBLA game would be fine.
Does such a game exist?
I know CoD 3 was rated teen but I believe it does not have splitscreen.
GRAW2 is a potential candidate...

Have you tried the Army of Two games?

I haven't but I think there are some serious language issues with that one... do you know if it can be turned off?
I want syndicate and have never played but wonder if it would fit. Don't know language issues or not.

I haven't played an Army of Two game in a while to be honest so I wouldn't know if it can be turned off.

Isn't there a filter in Bad Company 2?

Rainbow 6 Vegas has some major language. Some of which I am not sure you would want to explain to an 8 year old. Not sure you can turn it off either.
Can't remember if there was language in denied ops. But it is a fun co-op objective based shooter.
Too bad What They Play website was shut down. They were pretty good about explaining what was what for picking games for kids.

I don't remember R6V or R6V2 being all that bloody or profane. Was I just not paying attention?

No you were not paying attention. The bad guys yell all kinds of obscene things at you.

It's been a while since I played them and didn't have a kid that could comprehend at the time. What the bad guys yell at me is probably nothing compared to what I yell back at the TV!! :D

America's Army would be ok if it has split screen coop. It's graw like. Capt.t and I played conflict denied ops but I can't remember if there is language. I would imagine there is language though.

OK looks like GRAW 2 was a winner. I picked it up from a kijiji ad for a whopping $5. Aidan liked it and it gets the dad seal of approval.

Corey was tough. When I first showed up (9), I allowed science fiction shooters only and I had to play with him. As he showed maturity, I let him play without me but all his friends were on the hardcore stuff so he never really had anyone to play with. At age 14, I pretty much let him play what he wants as long as the sexual inuendo's were minimal (bye bye Army of two) and there wasn't nudity. By age 16, I won't bother limiting that too much either.

I AM kidding btw....I'm starting her out with the Silence of the Lambs series to warm her up to the better stuff
Again, I kid
I'm starting to feel your pain though. Kids at the age where she's starting to notice what's going on in-game and I have to send her away sometimes. I hope that shooter works out good for ya's

My son's friend was over the other weekend -again, 8 years old. He's a challenging kid with some family issues to be sure. Permissive parenting being not the least among them. He's pretty much allowed to watch (on YouTube and DVD) or play (PS3, Xbox) what he wants.
He and my son are playing Plants vs Zombies co-op on the Xbox and out of his mouth pops "you have to get a rape train going."
He heard it on a CoD YouTube video. Doesn't even know the meaning of the word of course, but I had to make him repeat himself to be sure I heard him right. Discussion ensued with him, and subsequently his mom.
This is the shit *I* am dealing with. And who knows what goes on when my son is at his house. We won't even *let* Aidan go to the kid's father's house. (Split family)

We have family that we won't allow Caleb to stay at because we don't agree with the attention he would get from the people in the house. When Corey was just two years younger, we didn't allow him to go to his grandmothers house because she was letting her son stay with her during "troubled" times and we didn't want Corey around that.
There are times we have to tell people to chill but not yet because a child has used the "train" word. That is horrible. It is a rape locomotive.
