That article contains 2 awesome pieces of news...
A new Elder Scrolls game is coming
A NEW game engine which means they will also use it for Fallout IV....YES!
I think we all figured that they would use a new game engine but to hear it confirmed is music to my ears. Guess this means I need to finally finish off the Mages Guild, and Dark Brotherhood quests in Oblivion...lol.

Hate to burst your bubble, but it might not be a new game engine, just an even more modified (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-23-rumour-elder-scrolls-5-in-the-works) Fallout 3 engine (Gamebryo). We may have to wait a bit longer (like the next Fallout game, at least) to see the first iDTech5 engine game.

So glad they are finally ditching the glitchy GameBryo engine. Can't wait to see the increase in visuals...but will this game be the same without all the glitches that are found in the current engine? :)

It does seem like it will build on the events of Oblivion (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1148576-skyrim-trailer-breakdown/), but it is not at all clear how closely it will follow. There's been a book (http://tinyurl.com/39nbe8n)that is set 40 years after Oblivion, so I'm not sure what that bodes for Skyrim.

OK. Adding the Game of the Year version to my GameFly Q just to be safe. I always intended to play it and just never did.

Until DAO Awakenings, the Oblivion Shivering Isles expansion set the bar for RPG expansions, it is definitely worth it as well. Be interested to hear what you think, as a lot of people find that it has not aged well - but considering it was a near-launch release for the 360, and how far games have pushed it since then, that should not be surprising.
I think a lot of Bethesda fans are just shocked we get more than one Elder Scrolls title in the same console cycle. [8-|]

Elder Scrolls is weird. I loved Dragon Age, I loved Fallout 3, I have yet to like an Oblivion game. I tried both Morrowind and Oblivion and had no fun. I think I will skip Skyrim and go right for a Skyrimjob.

So we've got conflicting reports on the game engine. I read an article on joystiq a few days ago that said it was indeed a new game engine. Then we have the other article saying it was a tweaked version of the older one. Hopefully we'll get some clarity as E3 approaches.

Seems solid now that engine is neither Gamebryo nor IdTech, and is entirely new (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-to-be-built-on-new-engine/).

DEFINITELY set aside a good amount of time to play. As someone already mentioned, they had 230 hours into the game, I think I had a little over 170. Its definitely a time-sucker. With that being said, its still the most fun I've probably had in a single player game in the last 10 years. There's ALWAYS something to do, and none of the missions or dungeons seem half-assed. Just a fantastic game all-around. With that said, I wasn't a big Shivering Isles fan. It was good, but compared to the main storyline and side missions in the game, it just didn't measure up IMHO. BUT, I still played through all of it, so how bad could it really have been. [;)] With Oblivion being my first Elder Scrolls game, I actually ended up buying Morrowind (Original Xbox title) to play through as well. Still haven't yet, but I intend to, shitty graphics aside.
Now if I could just get to Dragon Age as well!! UGH!! Need more gaming time!!

I liked Shivering Isles for having such a wild/bizarre art style that was so at odds with the normal Oblivion look. I picked up Oblivion and Morrowind for a few dollars on a massive Steam discount a while ago, so I may actually get through Morrowind at some point. Maybe. [:$]

I hope Bethesda promoted the guy who wrote the Assassin's guild questline from Oblivion into a more senior writer/designer position. Playing through those missions was easily my favorite time spent with the game.

As an official recovering Oblivion Addict, 11-11-11 sounds like an epic day.
However, from what I'm reading, there will be no Kinect support.
Do you other official addicts share my view that the lack of Kinect support is a disappointment?
I'm seriously thinking of getting the PC version and using the USC hack to provide Kinect support. Oh, and I'd have to buy a Kinect of course. So far, I have not seen a compelling reason to shell out $150, but this could be it!

I don't have it (Kinect) but I agreee this is a missed opportunity. I have said before that RPGs seem to be the most logical and natural choice for motion control to pull in the core gamers.

I'm actually surprised by this-- I think the game has definitely aged well. The graphics are still good imo (however, I lean more towards gameplay over graphics, so take that for what it's worth), the combat still makes for some tense moments, and just the overall game still plays really well. And still my only complaint with the game is the same as it was when it first came out--the leveling system they have for the game is messed up.
When you have to make sure you level up certain skills a certain way in order to get the most bonuses just so that you can keep pace with the monsters you'll be facing...That just sucks. But, aside from that I still think it's a pretty good epic RPG and I think Skyrim will definitely be just as good if not better than Oblivion. [Y]
Then again, I've always been a fan of the Elder Scrolls series since Arena (1994). They really haven't strayed too much from the formula over the years, but since all of these games are enjoyable anyway, I guess there hasn't been a need to do TOO drastic of changes.

You should get the PC version for the mods alone. Both Fallouts and Oblivion had great mods.

if the PC version has Steam achievements, I might get it on PC and 360. [8-|]
I also have played some Oblivion in the past couple of days - this time on my big PC rig, and it does hold up well (aside from some issues like their scaling system, and the unvoiced character/NPC stare at the screen dialogue system needs a serious refresh). Morrowind, on the other hand, has not held up so well. [:O]

Good point. The 360 version has the advantage (for me) of being easier to connect up to my home theatre system. And I prefer the controller to the keyboard (except for D-Pad) which is an issue for Oblivion. Fallout PC supports both. I did try a keyboard mapping hack for Oblivion and that worked sort of OK.
The availability of the mods plus Kinect will probably push me over the edge to the PC version. I'm looking for an excuse to buy Kinect - did you guess? ;-)
