For Xbox 360 version.

Thought I’d share my thoughts on this game. First off I should say I haven’t really liked any of the PoP games to date. I have liked the way some of them looked and the way some of them have controlled but for the most part I would rent them, try them out and usually not finish them. Other then the first one I’ve never purchased one they just aren’t my type of game. They usually frustrate me with the crazy controls even when I’ve liked the story and graphics.

So this time around I skipped my usual first day purchase and decided I would rent it instead.

I’ve played about 70% through the game so far and will likely finish it by Friday or in the next 6 hours of game play judging it by what I’ve invested so far (about 10 hours).

Graphics,

I don’t normally like cell shaded games. PoP however is a damn fine looking game. It’s smooth and is well presented I can’t really find any major complaints with the game, it looks great, heck for cell shading I’ll go one further and say it looks down right amazing.

9/10 eye candy for sure

Game play & controls:

I don’t normally like the game play of a PoP game either all the running, jumping and crazy acrobatics usually annoyed me in previous games but in this one for some reason they’ve really refined how the game plays and controls. I’m in one word – “Impressed”
Everything does what it should and so far the only frustration I’ve had is that I make a mistake but it’s not that the controls are too tough they’ve balanced this game to a near “blizzard” (the developer) like polish.

9/10 I can’t help it, this game plays and controls like a vision.

Replay:

This would be the only fly in the ointment I think for PoP. I think I’ll be done my first play through in around 15 hours. I think if I tried to do absolutely everything there is to do and collect all 1001 light orbs (I have 600 or so now) it might take around 20 hrs.
I don’t know that there is anything to bring me back to the game after I finish it but I’ll update the review if any new modes or things of that nature pop up once I’ve finished it later this week.

5/10

I’m a skeptic that is now a believer. PoP is a damn fine game even for people that might not like the previous games like myself. I rented this game on Friday and bought it on Sunday so I think that speaks for itself. If you like adventure and action type games I think there is no finer game on the 360 at this time then PoP it really is a stellar product from Ubi Montreal.

Over all: 8.5/10

I've always been curious about the POP storyline but the husband refuses to invest. I'm no good with those kinds of games but I like to watch him play. Maybe I'll snag it for him for x-mas. Nice review[Y]

Does this PoP reference any of the Sands of Time series. I really liked the first PoP:Sands of Time but the series took a major nose dive after that. The time rewind mechnic really made a jump and die platform like PoP tends to be a lot more playable.

no it doesn't. i just finished it tonight and i will say i like sands of time a lot better. this one is better than warrior within (hate it) and i never played the two thrones so i don't know how it is. the thing i missed the most in the new prince of persia is the fighting from sands of time, taking on 3-5 guys at a time was a challenge and felt good when you're beat them. this PoP the only time you fight is during the boss fight and the mini boss fights, let me tell you this i hated the boss fights but that's my opinion.

it did look great though.

I finished this last night and I'm the exact opposite of Soul Embrace. I didn't like the Sands of Time game play (liked the graphics) but I love this new one. This one reminds me of combination of ICO and SoC by Sony the way the game plays and feels. I honestly loved that I didn't have lots of little pions to fight along the way but of course everyone has different tastes. I also loved the final boss battle and the easter eggs it opened up (maybe multiple endings as well I'm not sure - I just choose to do it one way with out fully exploring if there was a different possible ending....might reload my save and find out tonight)

Spoiler alert *

After beating the game you add the skins for the Assassins creed main character for the prince and Jade from Beyond good and evil for the Princess (There are also 2 more skins for each character still to unlock as well)

Cheers

Great review Calv1n! Your review was instrumental in my recent decision to go ahead and buy POP for the 360.

In fact, I just replied to someone in another thread asking for POP player's 2 cents worth on the game so I wrote an impromptu review there (/forums/t/26662.aspx) (I didn't expect to write so much and so I didn't follow the criteria for a "proper" review).

Objectively, I agree with an overall 8.5 rating for POP. But, from a biased view, I give it an 8.75[:P]

Sorry to butt in, I just wanted to ask this.

So whats the deal with the graphics in this game? Are they going for a specific stylized look? I always see the commercials on tv and think it looks like a cartoon or something from a older system.

excaluber,

It is a cell shaded game and IMO the best one to date. Cell shading has been around for a long time I'm surprized that your unaware of these types of games.

The first3D video game to feature true real-time cel-shading was Jet Grind Radioin 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast. A game I played a lot in 2000 and it became a dual pack in with DC's along with SegaGT if I remember correctly.Another game, called Fear Effectfor thePS was also released later in 2000.

Here is a list of most of the cell shaded games out there, their publisher, system and year released courtesy of Wikipedia.

heh...well that explains it.

I've never played one game on that list :)

I'm more into the FPS and sports games to be honest....i don't tend to venture to far outside of it. I never really got into zelda or the prince of persia games.

I did rent crack down, but hadda send it back before i actually got a chance to even put it in the xbox :)
