What do you think of Multiplayer?

Hey guys.. so some of you may have noticed (or maybe not!) that I haven't been on XBL much lately, even though I expected to be on quite a bit. I'm posting this here now because GTA is the game of choice, I assume, for the moment and I am really hoping to play with you all a lot more soon. With a wedding coming up and whatnot I've just had a lot of other real life stuff to deal with. And of course after I put time aside to play with you all last night on game night, on my way home I spotted a lone baby goose squeaking and waddling its way across a very busy street, so I had to save it from impending doom and spend the entire evening looking after it until this morning when I could take it to a proper wildlife rescue place.

Of course, I have only played this online once and was actually not to impressed with it myself.. but that's just a first impression. I'd love to hear what the rest of you think about the various gametypes and multiplayer experience overall. Please rant incessantly for me so I have something to read during breaks at work. =)

It's really one of those things that you need to test out for yourself. The actual mechanics remind me of Saint's Row MP, but the real beauty comes from 16 people having full roam of Liberty City. Team Mafiya Work and Cops and Crooks on one for all are my two favorite, but I know plenty of folks who will spend hours playing free roam just to screw around.


The games can be boring if all you're focused on is getting to the objective. It gets fun when you come up with creative ways to take advantage of the tools available in order to reach that objective. Case and point: Hopping in a chopper during a team deathmatch game with a couple other people and strafing the other team while they're pinned down behind a roadblock on the Algonquin Bridge. We complete a few runs when one of the guys on the other team gets a lucky headshot on the pilot. A few of the survivors dive out while the rest sit back and watch the helicopter list sharply, ram thebase of the bridge, explode, and then tumble in to the water. I bailed out after hitting the bridge but couldn't dodge the explosion. I go flying and slam in to the underside of the bridge.

i just got the game last night. i need to get a handle on the controls before jumping in to the mp, but i am looking forward to it.

<P mce_keep="true">The variety of game modes and match sizes are cool, and it provides a lot of funny moments.
<P mce_keep="true">However, I don't think it has the staying power of a game like Gears, CoD4, or R6V because at its core the gameplay and controls are just to awkward and weak.
<P mce_keep="true">It will be a fun ride for a while though. Give me Crackdown's gameplay with GTA's multiplayer modes and I'd be playing it forever.

After the initial rush, I think it will be something that I come back to once every couple week. However, for true serious multiplayer gaming, I will most likely stick with COD4 and sports games.

It's fun for goofing around. I actually think the race modes are the best since I like the driving in the game. The shooting is pretty weak.

I like just the free mode for multiplayer. Just to mess around, no rules, no reason just to have fun.

MP sucks because all the achievements have to be done with the GP.[:P]

That *might* be okay with a party system (so you only have to fight the GP), but for a fun teamwork COOP mode??? wtf rockstar... [8o|]

Anybody have trouble connecting last night? I could no tget into any of the multiplayer games, I would just get the Disconnected From Server message and dumped back to the apartment.

I've been playing it over at a friends on the PS3, and I am very underwhelmed. While it is fun playing with other friends in the room, I can see it getting boring pretty quick when playing by myself.

Yeah, I ran into some terrible lag last night - first time with that issue in MP for me. It was painfully slow, and once it hit, it didn't seem to improve (so I quit after a few minutes).

<P mce_keep="true">Ick. [+o(] I don't like Deathmatch at all. It seems that I'm always getting picked off from long range headshots with pistols and SMGs. Also, not haunting the multiplayer I have no ide where all the goodies are, like armor and weapons, so I'm a bit disadvantaged there.
<P mce_keep="true">Racing can be a hoot though. Got into a good room with WrekTaFyr Saturday night and had tons of fun with the different vehicle races.

you can't play ranked if you're in a party? what about trying to invite friends?

i got my first taste of the mp last night. some tdm and a couple races. while i had some fun, it was all with the gp. i don't know if this will have staying power as a mp title for me. maybe once i hook up with some AGErs i'll feel different, and i know there's plenty more modes to try, but i wasn't overly impressed.

Hang on! I thought you could go into party mode, get your posse together, then use the phone to get into any kind of match, including ranked ones. I can't recall if WrekTaFyr and I tried ranked matches when we were trying it out or not. Maybe he knows.
