The Empty Way

3 1/2 Hours into Sudeki now and I must say that this is indeedone polished Zelda-like, multi-party role playing adventure! All the elements that can make an RPG semi-addictive are in place. The user interface is much simpler than PSO's for example, yet plenty deep enough to satisfy. Play controls truly are tight and switching between characters in your party is as simple as hitting the white or black button. Even thoughbattlesare in real time (and very fun with simple to pull off combos), with a simple press of the "Y" button, you can slow time to a near stand still (similar to bullet time) while you power up with a health potion or select a special power attack to inflict. For even quicker access to the various recovery potions/herbs, you can map up to 4 of them to your D-Pad for instant use when needed right away.
It actually is useful to talk to nearly all the NPCs you encounter as they will ultimately tip you as to how to best deal with different types of enemies in battle or which merchants will pay you more than others for certain items you've found during your quests. The sound in Sudeki fully utilizes the Dolby Digital 5.1 experience (so much so you may find yourself looking to your left or right at times). The graphics are very clean, colorful and more than detailed enough. You can swith from the standard third person view to a first person view for looking around and, depending on the character's abilities, to see hidden items and cast a spell to reveal them or even make other items go away (to clear a path for example). And not all the characters battle in third person views with melee weapons or magic, the Princess uses magic staffs that shoot magical projectiles and this isdone in first person view using the Right Trigger to fire - just like Rainbow Six 3 in fantasy land!
All in all, Sudeki is turning out to be a surprisingly good RPG! And don't let the semi-anime-style looking screenshots or box cover art fool you; this game was developed by a UK based company and the voice overs give the game more of a Euro-International feel than anything else. When compared with the previous (and very few) RPG releases for the Xbox, Sudeki is indeed arefreshing, pleasant and very fun adventure! If the games ends in around 17 Hours as has been reported, then so be it. Until the likes of Fable or Jade Empire come along, this playerwill have enjoyed every minute of Sudeki!
Sudeki earns The Empty Way "price rating" of $44.99 New. And paying $49.99 for this game isn't exactly a crime either.
